Her personal humility & modesty is admirable. A woman who has been in politics now for about 40 years, a M.P. for at least 5 terms, a Central Minister on 3 occasions and a two-term Chief Minister now continues to be pretty unpretentious and down-to-earth at a personal level, as vouched for by people who know her.

1. I can't think of any other politician, male or female, in India currently, who has the kind of sheer guts and raw courage that she has.
2. She is extremely feisty and as someone who did most of her early politics as a streetfighter (starting as a student union leader, Chhatra Parishad (Youth Congress) '74 - '75 she believes in leading from the front. It is a wonder that she is alive and functional today because at least a couple of attacks on her while she was leading protest marches on the streets during the reign of the CPM were designed to kill her and nearly succeeded. One of them hospitalized her for about 6 months.
3. No other politician in W. Bengal currently has the drawing power that she has. 'Didi' can start a streetcorner rally, without accompanying police escorts or bodyguards and still pull in a crowd of many thousands in a short period without any manipulation or crowd gathering techniques.
5. She can be impulsive, mercurial, short-tempered and too blunt on occasions. However with age and her stint as the C.M. for nearly 7 years now, she has mellowed & matured in those respects. She is said to be totally honest personally though the same can't be said for several of her party bigwigs.
6. She is totally hands-on as an administrator and as a politician and a doer in every sense of the term. She extensively tours districts and knows intimately what is happening at the grassroots level there.
Political predictions are hazardous and pointless in most cases but, given the above and the whole nature of the W. Bengal population, I don't think the BJP has any chance of ever coming to power in W. Bengal in the foreseeable future unless she commits some serious missteps or she is 'eliminated'. However they can cause many problems sporadically with their brand of communal politics and their doctrine of sowing the seeds of divisiveness and hate with a view to consolidating their base.
